BAHS Wilderness Survival Shelter Building

posted Jul 14, 2017, 4:03 PM by Jason Tozer   [ updated Jul 14, 2017, 4:04 PM ]

The class was tasked with building a survival shelter, also called a debris hut.

It was built to the size of one of the students in the class. They built a triangular wooden frame structure and covered it with leaves.  For them to pass the test the individual who it was built for had to be inside and a classmate had to  stand on top of it without it collapsing.  It also needed to be able to withstand 5 gallons of water being poured on it.

BAHS Projects in Engineering Class Takes Off

Students enrolled in the first year course Projects in Engineering at Belfast Area High School are taking on several projects. They successfully completed a lighting project for the fall musical The Little Mermaid. The electric eel characters wore LED light strings that were wired by students in the class. An even more ambitious project is the creation of a quadcopter drone. The drone body was printed on one of the school’s 3D printers. Students are currently planning the various electronic devices and wiring needed to make the drone fly. Two engineers from the Belfast community, Don Cox and Dave Sprague, are providing academic and financial support to help make the project a reality. Students are also planning to raise money for the project by raffling a smaller quadcopter drone. Look for the raffle to begin after the holiday vacation. Later in spring, the class will also compete in the Wind Blade Challenge, a Maine high school wind blade design challenge that will allow students to explore composite manufacturing technologies and wind energy concepts. The Projects in Engineering class is a required class for anyone seeking to earn the STEM endorsement on their diploma.
