BELFAST — Two Belfast Area High School seniors received extra "hardware" a few weeks prior to graduation for their topnotch athletic exploits during their junior years.

Junne Robertson-McIntire and Jack Hansen, recipients of the 2018-19 Courier Publications/VillageSoup schoolgirl and schoolboy athletes of the year, received their certificates/plaques on Monday, May 18 outside BAHS.

The awards were to be presented to the duo weeks ago but delivery was delayed after schools closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

As a junior, Robertson-McIntire was a four-sport athlete for the Lions and was named Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference first-team all-conference in soccer, indoor track and outdoor track, in addition to playing basketball. She finished her junior year on the soccer pitch with 10 goals and two assists, in addition to collecting four league titles and three state championships in various events throughout the indoor and outdoor track seasons. She is one of New England's finest sprinters.

Also as a junior, Hansen, who played football, and indoor and outdoor track for Belfast, was first-team all-conference in all three sports, in addition to being named Class B athlete of the year for indoor and outdoor track (he excelled in pole vault, hurdles and jumps). He put up significant numbers as a wide receiver and defensive back for the Lions in football and went on to three KVAC titles and four state championships in various events during the indoor and outdoor track seasons.

The two hold a number of track records at the school.

In addition to their certificates/plaques, the teenagers received a one-year subscription to one of Courier Publications/Villagesoup print products or online websites.

Robertson-McIntire continued to impress athletically throughout her senior year, in soccer, wrestling and indoor track, while an injury midway through his team’s football season prematurely ended Hansen’s final year of high school athletics.

Both student-athletes were expected to participate in outdoor track, and again challenge for league and state supremacy in a number of events, but the high school spring sports season was cancelled due to the pandemic.

Both plan to continue their athletic careers in college. Robertson-McIntire will attend St. Joseph’s College in Standish and join the soccer and track teams, while Hansen will join the track team at the University of Maine in Orono.

Semifinalists and finalists for the 2019-20 Courier Publications/VillageSoup schoolboy and schoolgirl athletes of the year — which for the first time will be based on only two high school seasons of potential athletic exploits due to the statewide cancellation of the spring sports season — will be announced in the coming weeks.
