On Wednesday, March 11, the top geography students from the 4th and 5th grade classes at CASS, Nickerson, and Ames came together for the RSU71 Elementary School Geography Bee Championship. Contestants were selected from each school based on student scores on a preliminary  GeoBee runoff exam given by classroom teachers.  All questions were derived from the annual National Geography Bee question bank.

The finalists representing their schools included:

CASS 5th grade: Landon Coombs, Starla Richardson, Jem Bywater, Maddy Batty,

CASS 4th grade: Aspen Miller, Silas Ociepka, Alex Miller, Lucy Engstrom

Ames 5th grade: Zoe Fitts, Rowen Megquiet, Allyson Markham
Ames 4th grade: Charlie Green, Avery Gobin, Adam Taylor
Nickerson 5th grade: Connor Faulkingham, Emma Tripp, Nico Vaillencourt, Kloe Luce

After a fun-filled morning answering all sorts of questions about states, natural history, countries, continents, and culture, 2 students remained on the stage. The final winners were:
1st place - Lucy Engstrom - CASS 4th grade
2nd place - Nico Valencourt - Nickerson 5th grade

Congratulations to all participants!

A grateful thank you goes to Kathie Gass, Cindy Boguen, and Kristen Byer for helping run the elementary Geography Bee and to Cindy Rumney for setting up and taking down the show! This annual event is run by the Extended Learning Program with the goal of sparking more interest in geography and helping prepare students for the THMS Geography Bee.
