Addressing Racism Through Education and Action

"Intelligence plus character -- that is the goal of true education."

                                                           -Martin Luther King, Jr.

Please note: "Teaching Tolerance" is offering an upcoming program online through the Holocaust and Human Rights Center, free of charge, on Tuesday, July 7 and Tuesday, July 28.  Here is the link to the event on Facebook.

The deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and so many others serve as clear evidence that we as a society are not yet doing enough to eradicate racism from the face of our beautiful world. I hope that each one of us in the RSU # 71 Family of students, families, educators and community members will do everything in our individual and collective power to actively support and love one another during this challenging and historic moment and to intervene to stop hatred dead in its tracks whenever we see it.  Perhaps we can all do more.

For my part, I will continue to work very closely with Brandon Baldwin’s Maine Civil Rights Team Project in the coming year and also with our own outstanding and extremely important RSU # 71 Civil Rights Teams at Belfast Area High School, Troy Howard Middle School, Captain Alberts Stevens School, and the Ames Elementary School. I applaud the hard work of these students and their faculty advisors and want to personally do more to support these teams in whatever ways they would find helpful in the coming years.

I also want to see us diversify our school and classroom libraries to ensure that all our beloved children find texts that represent a wide variety of experiences and contributions of every race and ethnicity in our great United States of America.  In the meantime, here is a curated list of resources for parents and educators that can help us in our collective work with the fabulous young people who comprise RSU # 71:
